Extreme progressive metal is a tough genre to nail down. Like death metal, extreme progressive metal comes in many flavors. We spoke with Avienne, vocalist, and Riley, guitarist of Vintersea to get the inside scoop on Vintersea’s latest release, Illuminated.
Vintersea’s music is a blend of expansive and evocative instrumentation with both serene and brutal vocals on top. What’s really special about Vintersea is how the extreme qualities counter-balance and provide contrast to the spacious characteristics. At times the vocals complement the instrumentals with ethereal, mystical aspects. However, this band is willing to throw down too.
One of the things we discuss in this episode is how landscape can affect the writing process. For example, black metal from the frigid North of Scandinavia has an intrinsic “cold” quality. The sharp sounds, the bitter vocal timbre, the production – all lead to a quality that comes back to the landscape. Vintersea uses the Pacific Northwest terrain as a basis for musical inspiration. Since the band is based out of Oregon, huge expanses of beautiful terrain is available to pull inspiration from. This very clearly translates to a wide, massive sound. Vintersea’s music is much the same way in that it draws from their surrounding environment.
