Decibel Magazine

Decibel Magazine is a critical pillar in the metal community. It’s the last remaining paper publication that focuses exclusively on heavy metal. Their tagline, “Extremely Extreme”, is fitting. Where else can you find covers featuring bands like Gatecreeper, Opeth, Abbath, Cannibal Corpse, or Behemoth?

Albert Mudrian is the founder and Editor in Chief of Decibel and he’s what you’d call an expert. In 2004 Albert published Choosing Death: The Improbable History of Death Metal & Grindcore, a definitive history on the extreme music. He’s also been responsible for organizing multiple tours and festivals. The Decibel Magazine Tour and the Decibel Metal & Beer Fest feature hand picked, high quality bands. Of course, the combination of heavy metal and beer is always welcome!

Albums of the Year

Decibel is known for their always excellent “end of the year” lists. Every publication worth its salt has a “best albums of the year” list. Decibels is consistently unbiased and high quality, but it’s not easy put that list together.

To compound the challenge of finding the best albums of the year, the decade is coming to a close. This, of course, means capturing the best albums of the decade. Thankfully we’re in good hands with Decibel.

Decibel Hall of Fame

From time to time, when the moment is right, Decibel inducts an album into their hall of fame. Their most recent inductee, Permission to Land by The Darkness, is a really interesting choice. It’s certainly not metal, but it’s a great album with attitude and style.

Becoming a member of Decibel’s Hall of Fame is an honor for most as it results in a massive seven page section within the release of the magazine.

In this episode Albert joins us to discuss the health of metal in 2019, Permission to Land, and the process of putting together end of the year and end of the decade lists.
