Ben Umanov, aka “Vince Neilstein“, joins us on the podcast to discuss his work as a co-founder and editor-in-chief at MetalSucks.
We had a great chat with a legend in the metal journalism sphere in Ben Umanov. You likely know him by his pen name, Vince Neilstein. Ben is the founder of the immensely popular metal website, MetalSucks. We started the chat by discussing the global pandemic and how that has impacted the website.
We do get into some inner-workings of the site but shift mostly into talks about the modern progression of rock and metal. Metal music has progressed further and further into extremity and rock has progressed further and further out of relevance. Is this good or bad? I’d say it doesn’t really matter. If you still love rock and metal, there’s still plenty of great music being made. It just isn’t puncturing the zeitgeist like it used to. Will it ever again? I don’t know. Many of the experts we’ve spoken to say no but this is speculation. Albeit, professional speculation.
We get into more uplifting topics discussing some of Ben’s favorite releases this year. This includes Poppy‘s newest release. Ben discusses why he respects her music and what it means for the genre. This leads nicely into a discussion of synth wave music.
We wrap up the conversation discussing Chuck Klosterman’s influence on the website going back to the early days.
This conversation takes many twists and turns. Ben, it was a pleasure!
