2 Humans, 1 Sound
2 Humans (Grant MacKenzie and Kenny Parry) producing 1 uniquely, satisfying sound.
Jupiter Hollow’s mission statement rings true on their latest album Bereavement.
Bereavement is Jupiter Hollow’s third musical endeavor, following AHDOHM (2018) and Odyssey (2017). The album follows the same storyline from the previous two ventures, providing Easter eggs throughout their catalog for listeners.
Musically, it’s difficult defining Jupiter Hollow, which is how they prefer it. The Ontario duo does not want to be pigeonholed into one genre.
There are clearly elements of alternative metal in their sound, but that is not the sole genre. The same applies for progressive rock. If Jupiter Hollow did a 23andMe (Band Edition!), alternative metal and prog rock would come out the majority, but there are still a bevy of other genres pristinely mixed within their sound.
Regardless of what you define Jupiter Hollow as, Bereavement produces a sound that is sure to please the ear drums of all rock fans.
Within the first three tracks, Bereavement provides a soft, coffeehouse acoustic opener in “L ‘Eau du Papineau,” fading into the rolling piano ballad of “Scarden Valley.” This transitions into “The Rosedale,” a Fear Inoculum-esque banger.
“Kipling Forest” and “Sawbreaker” provide a heavier punch midway through the album, while “The Mill” adds some catchy grittiness.
The album’s 12-minute finale, “Solar Gift,” is Jupiter Hollow’s “Xanadu.” It encapsulates their overall sound and mission statement. Two humans producing one 12-minute, epic, space rock anthem.
Bereavement is yet another successful, complex project by Jupiter Hollow. The young Canadian duo is 3-for-3 and continue to grow with their sound and technicality.
With Jupiter Hollow continually producing an exciting future for progressive rock, er…alternative metal, er… you know what I mean.
