Melvins on the Road for Pinkus Abortion Technician

We found ourselves in the basement of a local venue recently having a conversation with sludge metal band, Melvins. Thanks to their dark and sludgy sound, Melvins were one of the bands responsibly for catapulting grunge era of the 1990s. Originally forming in Washington in 1983, Melvins’ unique sound influenced some of the biggest bands in the world. This list includes names like Nirvana and Soundgarden. They’ve also pushed their influences into heavier artists like Pig Destroyer, Corey Taylor, and Mastodon.

Melvins has a unique approach to both songwriting and live performance. Their most recent release, “Pinkus Abortion Technician,” makes use a dual bass guitar attack. In the past they have made use of two complete percussion sections. Somehow they managed to make touring with that much gear a possibility.

The band is incredibly hard working and is constantly touring. They have released 21 full length albums and 6 EPs since 1983. The tours take them on the road a lot and the band is all over both North America and Europe. If you like the Melvins, chances are they are coming to city very near you.

Ty and Mark sat down with the band in the back of a local venue before their show. Buzz Osbourne (vocals and guitar), Dale Crover (drums), and Jeff Pinkus (bass) all joined in on the conversion. Things discussed ranged from song writing to tornadoes to what writing an album with two basses was like. Buzz is the primary song writer for Melvins, but discusses his relationship with the rest of the members of the band in terms of improving upon songs with the help of others.

Listen to hear two tracks from “Pinkus Abortion Technician,” Don’t Forget to Breath and Stop Moving to Florida.
